BIDESHI PHOTOSTUDIO 436m57

Director: Kurt Hoerbst / Alexandra Grill.
When wandering through rural Bangladesh with a camera in your hand the sentence „Bideshi…chobi, chobi…! – Stranger! Take a photo of me!” will soon be heard all around. An unbelievably delighted eagerness to be photographed is definitely there. When Kurt Hoerbst met and fell for the village Rudrapur and its dwellers in 2005 the idea for the project BIDESHI Photostudio was founded. People in Rudrapur live simple, agriculture and craftsmanship dominate everyday life. Family itself as the highest rated value in society, is nevertheless rarely preserved in a photograph as it would be in more western parts of the world… Technology and the arts simply are too far away or not affordable- up until… The project BIDESHI Photostudio, which started off in December 2008 after intense preparations and diligent planning by Austrian Kurt Hoerbst, first and foremost provided a welcome opportunity to earn money for the men of Rudrapur. The experienced bamboo and clay specialists constructed a simple but impressive building within a month’s work – by hand! The hut and the entire project were organised in cooperation with Dipshikha, a well-established organisation in Rudrapur. As a close neighbour to the Meti-School, which is well-renowned through various prizes in architecture, the daylight studio offered locals to be photographed professionally from the beginning of February 2009. A glass roof and light Sari-fabrics on the side walls created a soft ambience in combination with the clay ground and back wall. While project assistant Alexandra Grill took digital photos of the families, Kurt Hoerbst photographed the villagers analogue in a large format system. Single portraits in front of the even clay background of course had to be taken as well! The digital data was edited, printed and laminated the same and ed on to the curious models the next day. Surprised by their image (and often amused) they usually welcomed their photographs with great fascination.

You Are with Me 341r6

Director: Andrey Khvostov.
A small airport somewhere in a Russian province. The only flight today is just about to arrive. It is nothing special for anyone, except her. Today he is coming back. He left four years ago for his military service, but ended up going through a real war. He hasn’t changed – but a scar on his face suggests a different story. She is diligently dressed-up, with a bouquet of white lilies. She wants everything to be perfect today. Her apartment. They are quietly talking over a glass of wine, scared to waste the emotions they endured to make this moment almost perfect. He cannot believe that she has kept waiting. She cannot show how hard it has really been. Her closest ones declared her insane, and she had to pretend that she had forgotten him. But this isn’t the reality! Maybe it is, but only for them! “And, as for myself, I decided to keep waiting, until you come back!”. “I love you”, he finally answers. Everything will be perfect. Their dream has come true. A new day shows the price of that dream. The question is, whether we are ready to see it.

Ecce Ach Maco 4p2z34

Director: Tomáš Vaďura .
The Macocha Abyss is the biggest abyss of its kind in the Czech Republic and even in the Central Europe. It depth of 138m was a great challenge for both of the B.A.S.E. jumpers, Martin Trdla and Robin Kaleta. There was more than the jump which requires technical proficiency, there was the aim to show how easy and difficult it is to get prepared. At first sight it seems all the legal restrictions were broken for the humble thirst for fame and popularity, to be seen in a film. However, the jumpers wanted to point at absurdity of some rules and obstructions. The feature connecting the document to other ones by Jumps, o.s., the wish to lead nonspecialist audience through the backgrounds of B.A.S.E. While filming the unconventional documentary there were no fatal or other injuries to any of the team, no harm to property private or state, and all the team behaved extremely carefully to protect the nature.

Beyond Burqa’s and the Taliban: the Afghan Film Festival

Taliban, turbans and terrorism: these are just a few things that spring to mind when we contemplate Afghanistan. But there is more to Afghanistan!

That’s why the Woest Foundation and Rialto bring the Afghan Film Festival to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on Saturday the 13th of November. For one day, Rialto will be the stage for the best Afghan films, documentaries, visual arts, music and debates. Forget about Camp Holland and plunge into the unknown parts of Afghanistan ! It is time to put the spotlights on the role of cinema, art and culture in the country…

By presenting the best and most recent films and documentaries, the Afghan Film Festival tries to offer a deep and nuanced view on contemporary Afghan society. The program touches upon diverse topics like the recent war, political elections, the fate of Afghan refugees abroad and the extensive drug addiction in the country. But the films also show the resilience and strength of the people in Afghanistan

Besides films and documentaries, there will be several debates in which politicians, filmmakers, journalists and Afghan students offer their perspective on Afghanistan ’s current society. In the evening, journalist and author Eefje Blankevoort will host the talk show Zap Afghanistan, in which she discusses the impact of our own imaging around Afghanistan with various experts. Which images from Afghanistan were we never allowed to see? And what did Afghans like to watch themselves in the past few years?  Around midnight you can in on a special edition of Rialto Laat, which transforms the film theatre into an Afghan club with several DJs and VJs, who mix traditional Afghan sounds and video-clips with steaming Western beats.

Day of acceptance 2m1q6r

Day 2 kicked off with rain and wind and yesterday was sunny and hot. I am not sure which I prefer... The day promised a lot and I didn't realise that the 3 films that I was about to see all had the same basic theme - acceptance. I caught Coming out of the nkuta, a film from Cameroon, at the Royal Hotel and was stunned at how prejudiced the society in Cameroon is. Homosexuality is still banned with "culprits" going to jail for five years. Apparantly, this country is even worse than mo...
